Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis)
Ideal Location:

Soil type preference: Prefers well-drained soils, but tolerant of poor drainage. Also tolerates clay soils.
pH preference: Prefers alkaline soils, but tolerates acidic soils. Ideal pH range: 6.0-7.8.
Moisture preference: Prefers moist soil, but tolerates wet soil, dry soil, occasional droughts, and occasional flooding.
Light preference: Full sun.
Salt tolerance: Somewhat tolerant of salt spray and soil salt.
Other: Tolerant of wind, compacted soils, and pollution. Susceptible to ice damage.
Pest susceptibility and tolerance: No serious pest problems. Susceptible to witch’s broom, leaf spots, powdery mildew, hackberry nipple gall, and scale.
Notable foliage and flower characteristics: Fruits persist into the winter.
Height and spread: On average, grows 40 to 60 feet tall and 40 to 50 feet wide.
Form: Oval, round, or irregular. Branches droop slightly. Recommended as a street tree.
Native status and zone: Zones 2-9. Native.
Other information: Edible fruit. ‘Chicagoland’, “Prairie Price’, and ‘Ultra™’ are cultivars that do well in Sheridan.
